Dear friends of Fiber Patch Placement,
Summer is here and the 2nd quarter of 2022 comes to close. It was a busy and exciting quarter! Not only did we have the chance to meet many of you in person again at the JEC in Paris and SAMPE US in Charlotte, but we also progressed well in our projects and further advanced FPP technology.
Two developments are in particular noteworthy for manufacturers of composite pressure vessels: First off, we started building a dedicated SAMBA System for tank reinforcements. And concurrently, our software team develops relevant features for ARTIST STUDIO that optimally support development engineers in laminate creation for dome reinforcements.
Besides our engagement for pressure vessels, we continue our focus on the needs of our aerospace customers. Based on the numerous requests we received, we’ve scheduled a next webinar that focuses on applying FPP technology on composite aerostructures, including a discussion of results of our mechanical characterization test campaign and introducing available simulation capabilities for patch-based laminates.

New SAMBA family member: SAMBA Pro PV
To contribute to the global transition away from oil towards green hydrogen, we at Cevotec are working on a dedicated 3D Fiber Patch Placement lay-up system called SAMBA Pro PV for pressure vessel reinforcements. Those reinforcements enable, among other benefits, material savings as well as increasing the storage efficiency in type IV tanks. The system we are currently building is optimized for fast cycle time and a high flexibility for different vessel dimensions, with the objective to seamlessly integrate into new and existing pressure vessel manufacturing lines. We’re aiming to build-up and commission the new SAMBA Pro PV in our cevoLab within the coming 12 months. Stay tuned for updates on this development!
Trapezoid shaped patches for PATCH ARTIST
One application where the use of FPP is very beneficial are dome reinforcements for composite pressure vessels, for example for hydrogen storage like explained above. Our CAD-CAM software ARTIST STUDIO supports engineers to create an optimized FPP laminate. Patches are automatically created and distributed along defined curves which cover the whole surface of the component. However, the dome areas of pressure vessels are characterized by curves with small radii which can make it difficult to achieve a homogeneous thickness with FPP-typical rectangular patches. Using trapezoid shaped patches allows a more even distribution along tight curves, resulting in an even thickness throughout the laminate. Beginning of June, our Application Development team got a new colleague: Bhargava Chary Ambarepeta. He is looking forward to contributing with his experiences and skills in the development of our FPP technology after following our activities for more than two years via newsletter and blog articles. In his position as Application Development Engineer, he is responsible for applying our FPP technology on composite components, e.g. feasibility studies, demonstrators and prototypes for series productions. Webinar: Fiber Patch Placement for composite aerostructures
FPP laminates feature a large number of patches representing a discontinuous fiber pattern. Naturally, the question of material equivalency to classical laminate designs with continuous fibers arises. In our last newsletter, we presented our new whitepaper on FPP for composite aerostructures investigating that question.
To further explore the topic, we would like to invite you to our webinar on “FPP for composite aerostructures” which takes place on Wednesday, September 28, at 4.30 pm CET / 10:30 am EST. We would like to give an idea on how to unfold the benefits of FPP for aerospace applications. The webinar comprises fundamentals of FPP, related material characterization of patch-based laminates and an introduction of simulation capabilities developed by Cevotec. Targeting the design and manufacturing of next-generation aerostructures, FPP offers a significant potential for optimized design, performance improvements and cost reductions, if applied in the right way.

Back in May, the first live JEC World for two years took place. It was so great to meet you, our customers and business partners, finally in person again! End of May, we traveled to the US and exhibited at the SAMPE North America exhibition and conference. Dr. Florian Lenz presented on “FPP in aerostructures” and we had a lot of interesting discussions.
