NIAR’s FPP video documentary, thermoplastic CFRP frames, multi FOD detection, and new software features

NIAR’s FPP video documentary, thermoplastic CFRP frames, multi FOD detection, and new software features

Dear Friends of Fiber Patch Placement,

Fall is upon us, and it feels hot as summer. But it’s not the weather driving up the heat, it’s a multitude of projects and events that make us run faster than usual during current weeks. We’re happy to share some of these exciting developments with you in this newsletter.

My personal highlight is the video documentary on Fiber Patch Placement by the National Institute of Aviation Research (NIAR). Especially to our long-term subscribers, I recommend a glance to take in fresh perspectives on FPP from a world-leading aerospace development center.

But also peeking into our own lab and development activities is worthwhile. Learn about the Airbus-led R&D project we just embarked upon, advancements in our vision technology and exciting new ARTIST STUDIO features.

Enjoy your read!

Video documentary: NIAR showcase their FPP advancements in aerospace

Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) builds laminates from precisely placed, oriented patches. That change matters on complex surface geometry. Wichita State University’s National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) has released a short documentary-style video that shows how their ATLAS lab approaches FPP and how it’s relevant to current challenges in aerospace composites manufacturing; it’s a concise look at FPP process intent and use cases, including performance test results.

Projects

Cevotec joins Airbus-led project on thermoplastic CFRP frames

Placement using FPP technology

Cevotec joins Airbus-led R&D on thermoplastic CFRP frames. In an Airbus-led consortium within the German aerospace research program “LuFo VII-1”, Cevotec contributes FPP preform expertise. The consortium comprises Airbus (lead), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Fraunhofer institutes IGCV, ICT and IFAM, the Leibnitz Institute IVW and Cevotec. The shared goal is clear: reduce weight, increase layup rates, and reduce production waste for future aircraft CFRP frame structures.

Technology

Cevotec advances quality control with multi-approach FOD detection

Cevotec advances quality control with multiple FOD detection technology approaches. Foreign Object Debris (FOD) remains a critical challenge in aerospace production. Our team has developed multiple detection methodologies, each tailored to different production environments and material types. We’ve investigated two proven approaches and are advancing two additional ones, ensuring the right solution for every application.

ARTIST STUDIO release 25.2.0: Global overlap analysis, multi-level freezing & file audit, improved curve definitions

Aerospace laminates leave little room for ambiguity. In Release 25.2.0, ARTIST STUDIO improves three aspects where clarity matters: patch overlaps, cross-team hand-offs, and curve generation names. The improvements lead to faster iteration and more consistent laminate quality, without guesswork.

Events

On the Road: From CAMX to Q4

Where we’ve been in Q3:

CAMX: The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo 2025

We crossed the pond and connected with our US-based customers and partners at CAMX. Our team showcased how Fiber Patch Placement accelerates automation for complex geometries, resulting in great conversations at booth J64. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to swap insights and explore new use cases

NIAR: Advanced Composites and Innovation Summit

Our CEO Thorsten Groene was invited to speak at the Advanced Composites and Innovation Summit (ACIS) of the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR). Opening the conference on the second day, his keynote focused on how FPP technology helps manufacturers to bridge the automation gap between AFP and hand lay-up.

Where we’re headed in Q4:

H2 Technology Expo: October 21–23, 2025 | Booth 5C70, Hall B5 | Hamburg, Germany

Hydrogen needs lightweight, high-rate manufacturing—perfect territory for FPP. Visit us in Hall B5, Booth 5C70 to talk composite pressure vessels, dome reinforcements, and storage efficiency.

Carbon Fiber Conference: November 4–6, 2025 | Wichita, Kansas

We’re back in Wichita to dive deep on carbon fiber trends with aerospace and industrial peers. Our Technology Expert Dr. Dimitios Sikoutris will take part in a panel discussing how FPP lay-up automation enables high-rate manufacturing in aerospace. Stop by and join the conversation!

Composites Meeting Nantes November 5–6, 2025 | Nantes, France
Meet our Sales Manager Anil Mertol at this B2B event in France focused on innovative solutions in composites
