Dear friends of Fiber Patch Placement,

While football fans from across Europe currently cheer for their teams competing in the Eurocup, we’ve cheered for our engineers in the cevoLab who fought last bugs and brushed up our new SAMBA Pro PV lab system for her first live demonstration in front of audience. Spoiler alert: ‘she’ – and our team – mastered it despite a bit of stage fright!

I’m also proud of two new case studies on Fiber Patch Placement: Based on the successful ACoSaLUS project completed last year, we’ve compiled an overview of the new and advanced lay-up features that enabled a precise lay-up of the project component, an HTP fairing, and demonstrated the potential to accelerate the lay-up process by factor 7x.

UK’s National Composite Center (NCC) published another FPP case study: Investigating options to reclaim and recycle dry fiber waste materials, the researchers found that up to 80% of cut-off waste can be re-purposed as feedstock for the FPP process, representing a significant potential to reduce both environmental impact and manufacturing cost!

SAMBA Systems

First Live demo of the new SAMBA Pro PV System

As part of our membership in the AZL Workgroup Composites Pipes & Vessels, we were honored to present our Fiber Patch Placement concept for dome reinforcements and virtually hosted the workgroup meeting at Cevotec on May 28. This workgroup meeting represented also the premiere to demonstrate – “live” and in front of a very interested audience – the capabilities of our SAMBA Pro PV system, dedicated to the reinforcement of composite tanks.

Fiber Patch Placement for sandwich parts in aerospace: Potential for 7x lay-up acceleration in legacy processes

Together with aerospace manufacturer GKN Aerospace Deutschland, material supplier SGL Carbon, TUM Munich and Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg, we have successfully demonstrated FPP lay-up automation of a horizontal tale plane (HTP) fairing on legacy tooling. The FPP process shows the potential to accelerate the lay-up time by a factor of seven while at the same time featuring better stiffness properties in critical areas. Get the insights in our project 2-pager and see the new lay-up features in action in our video.

cevoGripper

New gripper technology for components with large curvature

To master large ply placement on strong curvatures and increase the lay-up efficiency for components with large curvature sections, Cevotec is advancing its gripper technology to optimize drapability during the placement process. This enables the placement of larger patches on highly curved surfaces. The new gripper design complements the existing gripper solutions of various sizes and further broadens the application area of Fiber Patch Placement with the ability to scale patch sizes even on highly complex geometries. Still in development, the gripper is scheduled for launch beginning of 2025 – stay tuned!

Case study

FPP helps recycling up to 80% of manufacturing waste

Investigating recycling options for composite waste materials, UK’s National Composites Centre (NCC) found that Fiber Patch Placement has the potential to reclaim up to 80% of dry fiber material from the earliest stages of aerospace manufacturing as alternative feedstock. The NCC summarized their findings in a highly insightful case study, highlighting the significant environmental and economic impact of repurposing cut-off waste as FPP feedstock.

ARTIST STUDIO Software

ARTIST STUDIO Version 24.1.0 – More movements and rotations

The new ARTIST STUDIO Version 24.1.0 introduces several updates, primarily in MOTION ARTIST. Main enhancements are an improved movement generation for the SAMBA PV system, now with adjustable acceleration or speed per movement. PATCH ARTIST now also allows for the export of cutting sizes for production with pre-cut patches for development processes including robot moves already during the vision evaluation for a faster production. Company News

Welcome Anil, Susanne and Goncalo!

We strengthened our commercial team with two new professionals: Anil joined the team as Sales Manager. He coordinates our global sales activities and takes care of our current and future customers’ needs. As Marketing Manager, Susanne oversees all Marketing & Communication activities to increase our brand awareness and spread the word on all things about Fiber Patch Placement. Our Application Development team was enlarged by Gonçalo Biltes joining as new Composite Project Engineer. After more than two years of making valuable contributions to Cevotec´s FPP technology as working student, Gonçalo will now be involved in customer projects and continues to advance our gripper technology.

Events

See you around

Beside of the AZL workgroup meeting, we attended the Composite Sandwich Conference in April to showcase our horizontal tail plane fairing demonstrator manufactured with our SAMBA Step L showcased in the ACOSaLUS project.

At the AZL Annual Partner meeting, we experienced a fruitful get-together of technology-leading companies in lightweight construction and composites. As new member since 2024, we were impressed by the scope and depth of the activities and truly enjoyed the discussions ranging from new materials, new and growing applications and advanced processing technologies.

From July 22 to 26, we will be exhibiting together with our Japanese partner Fuji Industries at the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK (booth 2013).

From September 9 to 12, you can meet us at CAMX (booth MM15) in San Diego. We look forward to meeting our North America-based customers and business partners and are offering live evaluations of the savings potential for composite tanks using FPP dome reinforcements.

For more information, please have a look on our event calendar – see you there!

Thank you for spending some time with us

We hope you enjoyed reading our latest cevoNews. Enjoy the sunny summer and stay tuned for our next FPP newsletter in September.
