SAMBA systems for FPC and NIAR, ISO certification, new employes, virtual FPP & further advancements

Dear friends of Fiber Patch Placement,

This year was, let’s say, an exceptional one. A virus had the power to fundamentally change our social structures, the way we behave, the way we interact with each other, the way we do business. And while numbers unfortunately are still rising, recent news on vaccinations give hope for the important turnaround in 2021.

The year also brought new energy in areas that are very important for the future of our planet. Climate neutrality and emission reductions are now firmly anchored in governmental agendas. Hydrogen as a power source has emerged as a promising alternative to fossil fuels and is currently supported by initiatives around the world. Industry follows suit, as we can see for example with Airbus’ announcement of the ambitious zeroE program. Also we at Cevotec contribute our share: we have advanced our automated composite doyle reinforcement solution based on FPP technology, which enables manufacturers to save more than 10% of material in their pressure vessels.

On the commercial side, we are proud to announce important milestones: We have installed a SAMBA Pro Prereg system for Fraunhofer IGCV at the Fiber Placement Center, and received an order for a SAMBA Pro System from the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) – which will be the first installation of an FPP system in the United States.

While adjusting to the changed environment, we look confident to the future. We have leveraged 2020 to push important technology developments, to further develop our organization, to enlarge our office & lab space, and to acquire the ISO 9001 accreditation. It was a transformative year for Cevotec that has strengthened the foundations of our business.

Cevotec’s SAMBA Pro Prepreg is now part of the Fiber Placement Center technology portfolio

The Fraunhofer Institute for Casting, Composite and Processing Technology IGCV has taken a SAMBA Pro Prepreg production system from Cevotec into operation at the Fiber Placement Center (FPC) in Meitingen, Germany. The system is at the disposal of FPC’s industrial partners as well as all interested companies to develop automated CFRP production processes on the basis of the Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) technology.

NIAR’s ATLAS lab to install SAMBA Pro system in 2021

The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University (WSU) selected Fiber Patch Placement technology for their portfolio of future composites production technologies. By end of 2021, Cevotec will install a SAMBA Pro Prepreg system at NIAR’s Advanced Technologies Lab for Aerospace Systems (ATLAS). We and our U.S. partner Composite Automation are excited about the first installation of a Fiber Patch Placement system in the United States, and together with NIAR we look forward to interesting development projects in close cooperation with US composite manufacturers.

Patch order sequence optimization

Depending on the order in which patches are placed on a mold, the production time of the Fiber Patch Placement process may vary significantly. That’s why Cevotec has incorporated a new feature in ARTIST STUDIO to optimize the patch order sequence. Its goal is to find an optimal order in which patches are placed to minimize the production time.

Remote application development options

Given the continuing travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cevotec has upgraded its lab set-up to even better support application development projects with remote customer teams. Upgraded, high-definition camera equipment enables our customers to work “live” and remotely with our project teams in the cevoLab: If and as requested by our customers, we can live-stream the production of demonstrator parts, prototypes, or material tests directly to their computer screen. Of course, only via secure, encrypted transmission technology. This enables remote customer teams who are restricted in travelling to fully experience the progress of their application in our Fiber Patch Placement Competence Center.

New to the team

Cevotec continues to grow! Also in this past quarter we introduced two new colleagues to the team!

We welcome and introduce Arne Muncke as our new Sales Lead! With degrees in aerospace engineering and economics, he brings more than 20 years of industry experience to Cevotec. Together, we’ll be able to even better consult our customers on how to automate their composites production with Fiber Patch Placement technology.

Claudia Neumeister is our new HR Manager on board. The studied pedagogue has more than fifteen years of HR experience in medium-sized companies in various industries. She joined Cevotec because she not only wants to attract new talents to Cevotec, but also bring in own ideas and move things forward.

ISO certification: Highest quality standards with seal of approval

Particularly in the aerospace industry, the highest quality standards are an absolute MUST. This is in particular true for those high-performance composites which are produced on our SAMBA systems. That’s why we at Cevotec had quality in our focus from the very beginning: the quality of our technical systems and software, but even more the quality of composite components produced with them. Now our team made their commitment to quality official with the ISO 9001:2015 certificate.

This accreditation covers the implementation of a quality management system that will allow us to grow sustainably while reaffirming our promise to manufacturers of high-performance composites: we enable them to produce complex composites in volume and high quality – with our SAMBA Series Fiber Patch Placement systems

Events

Virtual is the new real – at least for now

Corona impacted and restricted almost all events this year. But there is no no-show for Cevotec. Even if we could not meet our customers and partners personally, we presented Fiber Patch Placement virtually. Our digital Demo on “Next-generation automation for high-performance composites fabrication”, that we launched on the Composites World industry platform, is a great example for advanced digital content and is accessible anytime for interested viewers:

Also, the Hamburg Aviation Forum in November was converted into a digital event and turned out to be a success. Our CEO Thorsten Groene held a keynote tech talk on “Automation for next-generation aerostructures” and our team had a lot of inspiring 1:1 discussions on applying FPP technology to aerospace applications.

Interested manufacturers of aero-composites also had an opportunity to meet us at the virtual Aeromart Toulouse event at the beginning of December, and interested students of composite technology listened carefully as our CTO Felix Michl gave a digital lecture at the Hansecampus Stade University of Applied Sciences.

Last but not least: our FPP expert Dr. Dimitrios Sikoutris presented “FPP Doyle reinforcements: A solution to increase material efficiency in the production of pressure vessels” at the 11th Workgroup Meeting “Composite Pipes and Vessels” of AZL Aachen.
